Duong Lam (53km away from Hanoi's center) is the first ancient village in Vietnam, which was recognized as a national heritage site in May 2006. There are over 300 old houses in the 9 villages of Duong Lam commune and they were built 300 - 400 years ago. The old houses are of wooden type, while other houses in Duong Lam have the walls of lateritic bricks (gạch đá ong) made of the lateristic soils which is available in the region. Other than the old houses, Mia pagoda is one of the must-see places!
Coming to Duong Lam, we can not be unamazed at a village which has been able to keep the colors of time and a world containing many secrets which have been gradually opened up before our eyes. Amid the hurry circles of modern life, Duong Lam quietly keeps itself closed in a corner so as to reserve the images of the past
IN THE MORNING
You start the tour from your hotel in Hanoi
at 08.30 and travel west of Hanoi through rustic country to Duong Lam, a purely agricultural village of the Red River Delta and one of the country's few remaining ancient villages.
You will firstly stop before the gate of the village and walk toward the village to learn about the argriculture and the role of the look-like abandoned house in the rice field. The first and important relic is the village's gate and the huge bayan tree will bring to you a pleasant feeling about this peaceful area. Keep walking on the village's small roads and alleys, you will arrive at the Catholic church, a Western influence by the French and the traditional communal house which is dedicated to God Tan Vien, one of 4 immortal gods of Vietnam. The tour continues on visiting a typical family whose house has 400 years old, we will enter the house and sit down for a cup of green tea and taste the tradional cake called Che Lam while the host telling you the story his family and the old house. Enjoy a Vietnamese lunch which is cooked by the family.
IN THE AFTERNOON
After lunch in the ancient house, take further walk to visit Mia Pagoda, built in the 15th century that houses nearly 300 statues of all sizes among with famous sculptures such as the statue of Buddha and the statues of the "Eight Vajra Deities". Thence get on your private vehicle for the drive back to Hanoi. Arrive in Hanoi and finish the tour around 4:00 PM
